Which workwear is the best?

The best workwear is the kind that people like to wear. Good workwear must fit perfectly, it must not be constricting or scratchy, and it must have practical pockets in which personal items or constantly needed work utensils can be stored. If it is also produced regionally, fairly and sustainably, is available in many colours and the procurement of spare parts is ensured over a longer period of time, it is good workwear. Anyone who buys workwear should also bear in mind that employees also judge a company by the quality of the clothing they are provided with.

What is the best workwear?

Only workwear that is actually worn is good workwear. Important: Employees should feel comfortable and, if possible, be involved in the decision. Breathable materials, fair trade cotton fabrics, the use of recycled polyester, practical detail solutions - there are many arguments to consider when choosing workwear.

What brands of work trousers are there?

Work trousers are offered by many manufacturers or brands. If you want to enjoy your workwear for a long time, when choosing, pay attention to where and under which conditions the workwear is produced, which materials have been processed and how the clothing is finished (single/twin seams? pocket reinforcements?). Nowadays, the provision of sustainable workwear is becoming more and more important; several brands have already specialised in this.

What do you wear as a craftsman?

For a long time, craftsmen's clothing was guild clothing, and the colours even indicated the profession. Nowadays, workwear for craftsmen has to be one thing above all: tear-resistant, practical, robust and comfortable. And because every trade has different requirements, the workwear should also be tailored to the trade. A master butcher wears different work clothes than a locksmith or roofer. When choosing your workwear, you should also look for seasonal accessories such as Bermuda shorts or padded work jackets.

Where to buy work clothes?

If you want to buy work clothes, you can usually find them in DIY stores or on the internet. While DIY stores often only have a limited range of garments, materials or clothing sizes in stock, which sometimes does not cover all requirements, the selection on the internet is often (unmanageably) large. The disadvantage: there is no advice on the internet, the decision to buy is made only on the basis of appearance and price. Unlike leisurewear, however, workwear should fit well and it should be easy to get replacements of the same quality. A consultation can provide a lot of useful information, which can sometimes save you money. Also note that workwear is regulated by law in many industries. In these cases, your employer is obliged to procure, pay for and provide workwear. What many people don't know: You can also rent workwear instead of buying it. Renting workwear can be thought of as a subscription: The clothing is provided, washed, repaired and replaced when worn - always in consistent quality.

Who has the best work trousers?

Studies show: Well-fitting work trousers make a decisive contribution to how comfortable you feel in your work clothes. However, work trousers not only offer extra comfort on the job, but also the necessary protection. Unlike the jeans you wear in your free time, work trousers are designed for specific jobs. If you want to find the "best" work trousers for you, you should ask yourself what purpose the work trousers have to fulfil. Do you handle chemical pesticides, work with sharp-edged metals or outside, on construction sites (even in bad weather)? Do you need knee pads, protection against liquid chemicals or water-repellent material? Work trousers are generally more robust than "normal" trousers. And they usually have more pockets. But be careful: in some professions, lockable pockets or metal press studs are obligatory. Specialist retailers know about these requirements. If you are unsure, it is best to ask for advice.

What work trousers are there?

Work trousers can be found in a variety of designs - for a wide range of occupations: with and without protective features, made of light and heavier fabrics, with many or with few additional features (such as hammer loop or folding rule pocket), with elastic waistband, with belt loops or with braces as dungarees. Work overalls are also very popular in some professions and countries. Important: Work trousers are made for working. Good quality pays off. It is best to buy your work trousers from a specialist retailer or from specialist suppliers of workwear. This way you will feel safe and well protected in your new work trousers.

How heavy are work trousers?

The fabric or surface weight of work trousers is usually between 250 and 300 g/m². Depending on the size and additional features, an average pair of work trousers weighs about 1 kg. Heavy fabrics are generally more robust than light ones; the weight per unit area of blue jeans can be over 300 g/m². Heavy fabrics are not necessarily the higher quality fabrics. It is more the case that a higher quality fabric has at least a proportion of natural fibres such as cotton or lyocell.

Is work clothing deductible?

Tax offices recognise flat-rate expenses for typical work clothing as income-related expenses if it was purchased privately. If the work clothing is provided by the employer, it depends on whether it is protective clothing (PPE) or typical work clothing. In both cases, the provision of work clothing does not constitute a pecuniary advantage in the sense of wage tax; this work clothing cannot be deducted from wages. The situation is somewhat different if the clothing can also be used privately.

What work clothes does the employer have to provide?

In many industries, work clothing is required by law and must be provided by the employer. In most cases, occupational health and safety regulations or hygiene requirements are the reason that work clothing must be worn. In these cases, the boss is obliged to procure, pay for and provide the prescribed work clothing. This also applies, for example, to outdoor workplaces that require weather protection. Those who work in the food industry are obliged to wear HACCP-compliant work clothing - and the boss must also provide this.

How often do work clothes need to be washed?

How often workwear needs to be cleaned or washed depends on who wears it and where (in which industry, in which profession). Sometimes a daily change of work clothes may be mandatory - for example in the food industry. Work clothes that are heavily soiled and may have an unpleasant smell should be changed and washed at the end of the working day. If work clothes are compulsory at your workplace or in your company, perhaps even for safety reasons (in which case it is PPE), the employer must provide the clothes and also clean them after use.

How should work clothes be washed?

Work clothing - especially that which has protective properties - should be professionally cleaned. This is the only way to ensure that the clothing is washed hygienically and that the protective function of the workwear, such as PPE, is not impaired. The employer is responsible for professional cleaning. Professional cleaning is also recommended for environmental reasons: Industrial laundry uses significantly less (fresh) water per kilogram of laundry than the home washing machine, and energy consumption is also kept low by state-of-the-art equipment. Some providers already work with green electricity in many of their industrial laundries, including CWS Workwear.

Why is work clothing important?

Since about the Middle Ages, craftsmen have worn work clothes, i.e. clothing that identified them as belonging to their profession. Today, too, work clothes are important - like good, functional tools, the right clothes are an indispensable part of many professions. But why actually?

The most important property of work clothing is certainly to minimise the risk of accidents and injuries. This is true, for example, in the metal industry, in road construction or in the chemical industry. But professional workwear also radiates professional competence, it underlines the recognition value of a company and helps to create a greater sense of togetherness in the team. A third, good reason to wear work clothes is that private clothing is protected from wear and tear.
