Safety lighting - consulting, installation & testing

Safety lighting or emergency lighting of escape and rescue routes provides orientation for people in the event of danger, even in the event of a power failure. Safety lighting thus reduces the risk of accidents and saves lives in an emergency. Emergency lighting enables people to leave the building safely so that emergency services can move quickly to the scene of the fire.

Safety lighting regulations

Building owners and operators are responsible for safety lighting and emergency lighting. Employees and visitors need to be protected. This is based on the requirements of the Workplace Ordinance (Arbeitsstättenverordnung / ArbStättV), the Building Regulations (Baunutzungsverordnung / BauNVO), DIN EN 1838 (emergency lighting) and DIN EN 50172 (safety lighting systems). The types of building concerned include:

  • Public buildings: e.g. hospitals, schools, museums, theatres, government buildings
  • Commercial buildings: e.g. office buildings, shopping centres, hotels, restaurants
  • Industrial buildings: e.g. factories, production facilities, warehouses.

Safety lighting systems and emergency lighting systems also need to be checked regularly.

Tip: We recommend having acoustic warning and guidance systems installed in addition to safety lighting. The combination of visual and acoustic escape route guidance helps to significantly shorten evacuation times.

Types of emergency lighting:

  • Single-battery systems are used for escape signs or emergency luminaires. They have an integrated rechargeable battery and illuminate for one, three or eight hour(s) as required.
  • Central battery systems (CPS system) have the same function and operating time as single battery systems, but the luminaires can be centrally monitored.
  • Group battery systems (LPS system) are used decentrally to supply emergency luminaires within a fire compartment. They have a minimum service life of 5 years.
  • Emergency generators function even if the power supply network has failed. An automatic start-up and consumer switchover is required for all systems for which a back-up power system is prescribed by law, e.g. for emergency lighting.

Testing safety lighting systems and emergency lighting systems

Safety lighting systems must be inspected by a competent person every four years. Emergency lighting systems require an annual functional test.
