Amount and types of fire extinguishers

CWS Feuerlöscher-Montage und Wartung-Jetzt anfragen

Fire extinguishers are mandatory for commercial enterprises. The number of fire extinguishers is determined by the number of extinguishing units (LE). This is an auxiliary quantity that compares different fire extinguishers with each other in order to calculate the extinguishing capacity and the need for equipment. The choice is influenced by the following factors:

  • Fire hazard and fire load
  • Floor area of the building incl. run length
  • Fire class(es) in the building
  • Damage prevention of extinguishing agents

CWS offers a wide variety of fire extinguishers, so you can be sure that we will find the right product for you.

Fire extinguisher assembly

from a professional

The CWS Fire Safety experts assemble the fire extinguishers with the appropriate mounting material and also apply the fire protection labelling at the equipment locations.

Good to know: The handle height is between 0.8 and 1.20 metres. This has proven itself in practice.

Of course, we also dispose of your old units professionally. Contact us now.

Properly maintain fire extinguishers

Fire extinguisher maintenance in the commercial sector is stipulated in the regulation ASR A2.2, "Measures against fires" and requires fire extinguishers to be tested at least every two years by an expert.

Our technicians, trained in accordance with DIN 14406-4, carry out the maintenance directly in your company. In the process, the fire extinguishers are professionally maintained, their functionality is checked and wear parts are replaced. A new maintenance certificate on the devices proves the maintenance and provides information about the previous and next maintenance.

With a maintenance contract with CWS Fire Safety, we take care of everything and automatically send you the new maintenance date. We will also be happy to provide you with the necessary documentation in accordance with ASR A2.2 and BetrSichV.

What fire extinguishers exist?

We distinguish between powder extinguishers, foam extinguishers, water extinguishers, carbon dioxide extinguishers and grease fire extinguishers.

Which fire extinguisher is used for which room?

A general answer is not possible. The choice depends on various factors (e.g. the fire hazard and the fire classes). Basically, the following are suitable, for example:

  • Foam extinguishers for interiors
  • Grease fire extinguishers for kitchens
  • Carbon dioxide extinguishers for IT server rooms

We will be happy to give you a concrete recommendation after assessing your building. Contact us now.

What do the large letters such as A, B, or C on a fire extinguisher mean?

The letter shows the fire class for which the fire extinguisher is intended. If several letters are shown, the device is approved for several fire classes.

  • A = Solid, non-melting materials such as wood, textiles, paper and coal
  • B = Liquid, melting solid substances such as gasoline, oils and waxes
  • C = Gaseous substances, including those under pressure, such as propane, butane, acetylene, natural gas and methane
  • D = Combustible metals such as aluminium, magnesium and sodium
  • F = Edible oils as well as vegetable or animal fats

When do fire extinguishers have to be replaced?

The service life of a rechargeable fire extinguisher without continuous pressure is about 20 to 25 years. However, this depends on the device manufacturer and type.

Can I also use a fire extinguisher from a hardware store or discount shop?

Caution! There are several criteria that should be considered when making a purchase.

  1.  In the commercial sector, every fire extinguisher needs proof of maintenance by a competent person. This is not always the case with a model from the DIY store.
  2. As a rule, these are powder extinguishers. They usually cause a lot of damage. Powder settles in every little crack, whether in floors, cupboards or electrical appliances.
  3. Fire extinguishers often also have a low extinguishing unit (LE) and do not provide the prescribed extinguishing power.
  4. The devices are usually permanent pressure extinguishers and must be inspected by an expert every 10 years according to § 32 of the Pressure Vessel Ordinance, for example by the TÜV. Expert knowledge is required here.
