Fire protection in the catering and hotel industry is extremely important, as the fire risks are manifold. Optimum service and safety for guests and employees are also equally important. Quick evacuation of guests in the event of an emergency is just as important as avoiding false alarms so as not to negatively impact the guest's stay.
The fire safety regulations for the catering and hotel industry must therefore be taken into account regularly during ongoing operations and especially when opening, converting and renovating a catering or accommodation facility.
Fire risks for restaurants and hotels
There are many fire risks for the catering and hotel industry. One of the most common causes of fire is careless smoking in hotel rooms. In addition, the catering industry has a high number of people both during the day and at night.
In addition, a large number of technical devices that are in constant use (e.g. lighting or other building services) pose a considerable fire risk. There is also the risk of grease fires in the kitchen.
For this reason, catering and accommodation facilities require fire protection measures for a wide range of protected areas so that incipient fires can be quickly detected and extinguished. At the same time, quickly and easily accessible escape and rescue routes - especially for multi-storey buildings - are essential.
Fire protection regulations for catering and hotels
According to DGUV 110-001, BetrSichV and ASR A2.2, the fire protection regulations in the catering industry require equipment for fighting incipient fires. The respective type and number of extinguishing devices depends on the floor space and the fire risk. In addition, the fire protection regulations for hotels and restaurants are regulated individually in each federal state.
At the same time, fire safety training for employees is also important in the catering industry. According to §10 ArbSchG, ASR 2.2 and DGUV, employers should train at least 5% of employees as fire safety assistants.
Your regional fire safety experts at CWS will be happy to support you in implementing the individual fire safety regulations and ensuring the best possible safety for your guests and employees.
Fire safety training for employees in the catering and hotel industry
As part of the fire safety assistant training, employees in the hospitality industry learn all the important basics of fire development and firefighting, as well as the correct behaviour in the event of a fire. At the same time, they learn the practical use of fire extinguishing equipment.
In addition to the fire safety assistants, it is essential that all other employees receive regular fire safety training. Employers in the catering and hotel industry are also obliged to provide annual fire safety training in accordance with the ArbSchG, DGUV and the Industrial Safety Ordinance. Employees learn the correct behaviour in the event of a fire and internalise the escape and rescue routes.

Escape route plans in the hotel
In addition to technical and structural fire protection equipment, escape route plans play an important role in hotels. They provide orientation in the event of a fire and clearly show guests the floor plan of the floor and the shortest escape route from the hotel room.
The escape route plan also contains the hotel's fire safety regulations. This means that hotel guests can immediately find all the important instructions for preventing fires, first aid facilities and the correct behaviour in the event of a fire.
