An early alarm in case of fire always requires faultless and functioning fire detectors. However, fire detectors are subject to both an ageing process and soiling due to various external influences - such as dust, moisture or changing temperatures. Consequently, regular detector replacement is required in accordance with DIN 14675.
Detector replacement in accordance with DIN 14675 is required for point smoke detectors and measuring chambers of aspirating smoke detectors at prescribed intervals. Consequently, all point-type smoke detectors and measuring chambers must be replaced as follows:
- Smoke detectors with contamination compensation or automatic calibration device: Every 8 years.
- Smoke detectors without soiling compensation or automatic calibration device: Every 5 years.
In contrast, there is no obligation to replace heat detectors (link news article) and manual call points or manual call points.
Important: Regular inspection and replacement of fire detectors not only ensures timely alarming, but also reduces false alarms and associated business interruptions.

Responsibilities for detector replacement according to DIN 14675

The operator of the building is responsible for an intact fire alarm system - including fire detectors. Consequently, the operator is responsible for regular maintenance and replacement of the fire detectors according to DIN 14675.
Important: If the prescribed deadlines of DIN 14675 for the replacement of detectors are not adhered to, there is a risk in the event of fire:
- Loss of insurance cover
- Criminal prosecution
- Claims for damages
