Door hold-open system: briefly explained

Ensure that fire doors close reliably in the event of a fire.

16 December 2024 Fire Safety

Door hold-open systems are specially developed systems that ensure that fire doors are kept open during daily operation. In the event of a fire, however, the doors close automatically. This effectively reduces the spread of smoke and fire and ensures secure closure.

Types of door hold-open systems

A common variant is the magnetic hold-open system, which interrupts the circuit of the magnet when smoke is detected and thus automatically closes the fire door. This type of system is often used in schools, workshops and production areas.

Another option is the integrated door closer, which is built into a slide channel and therefore offers an aesthetic appearance. This door hold-open system also ensures that the door closes automatically when smoke is detected and is particularly suitable for environments where an attractive design is important.

The overhead door closer is mounted on single or double-leaf fire doors with an integrated smoke switch. This closer makes it possible to open the door with little effort. A special option is the free swing mechanism, which makes the door move smoothly like a normal room door. This is particularly advantageous in retirement homes, hospitals and schools, where easy operation of the door is important.

Parameters such as closing speed, closing sequence control (for double-leaf doors), opening damping, closing force and hold-open angle can be customised for optimum operation of door hold-open systems.

Good to know: Door hold-open systems can also be retrofitted.

Guidelines for door hold-open systems

Türfeststellanlage-Wartung-CWS Fire Safety

Door hold-open systems that are installed on fire doors must be approved by the German Institute for Standardisation (DIBt). This approval guarantees that the systems meet the required safety standards.

DIN 14677 also stipulates that door hold-open systems must be maintained every 12 months.
