A fire brigade key depot (FSD) is a secure storage system that allows the fire brigade to gain quick and non-destructive access to a building in the event of a fire or emergency. The keys or access cards to the property are stored inside the depot. It is mounted directly on the outside of the façade and is specially secured against unauthorised access.

Legal requirements and DIN standards for an FSD
The installation and operation of a fire brigade key depot is regulated in Germany by DIN 14675. Installation is usually required by law.

How a fire brigade key depot works
e fire brigade key depot is usually connected to the fire alarm system (BMA). As soon as the system triggers an alarm, the fire brigade can retrieve the key from the FSD. Access is granted using a master key belonging to the fire brigade.
In addition, an FSD is usually equipped with a tamper switch that triggers an alarm in the event of tampering attempts.
Classification of fire brigade key depots (FSD)
Fire brigade key depots are divided into three classes in accordance with DIN 14675-1 (as of 2020-01). The classification is based on the security requirements of the property, the type of keys stored and their integration into the fire protection system:
- FSD Class 1
For properties with low risk potential. Only a single key is stored – typically for rooms without security-relevant contents. There is usually no connection to the fire alarm system (BMA). - FSD Class 2
For properties with medium risk. Here, too, no master key is stored. This class is only permitted to a limited extent, as it is not fully VdS-compliant. In many regions, the use of FSD 2 is no longer recommended or approved. - FSD Class 3
For security-critical buildings with a high risk, such as industrial plants or care facilities. A master key may be stored. Access is connected to the FCS and the depot is continuously monitored electronically. The technical requirements are regulated in detail in VdS Guideline 2105.
