The correct installation of fire extinguishers is a key aspect of occupational safety. But what needs to be considered? This guide takes you through all the important aspects of hanging fire extinguishers correctly in accordance with the current health and safety guidelines (ASR A2.2).
Fire extinguisher installation: step by step

When installing fire extinguishers, quick accessibility in an emergency is paramount.
Where should fire extinguishers be hung?
The guidelines stipulate that the nearest fire extinguisher must be within a maximum walking distance of 20 meters from any location in a workplace. This requirement ensures that no valuable time is lost in the event of a fire.
At what height should fire extinguishers be hung?
The optimum handle height for fire extinguishers is between 80 and 120 centimeters above the floor. This height has proven to be particularly practical, as it is within easy reach for most people and allows the fire extinguisher to be removed quickly.
It is important that the holder is designed in such a way that the fire extinguisher can be removed without difficulty.

Strategic placement for maximum safety

The choice of location plays a decisive role in the effectiveness of fire extinguishers. Escape routes and areas near exits to the outside are particularly suitable.
Access to stairwells and intersections of traffic routes or corridors are also suitable locations. This positioning ensures that fire extinguishers can be found quickly even in stressful emergency situations.
Hang up fire extinguishers: Labeling is important!

The clear marking of fire extinguishers is essential. Every fire extinguisher must be marked with the fire safety sign F001 “Fire extinguisher”. However, this marking alone is not sufficient in confusing areas. Additional directional arrows must be attached to show the way to the nearest fire extinguisher. In longer corridors in particular, it is advisable to install flag or angle signs so that the locations can be seen from any direction.
Protection from external influences
Fire extinguishers must not only be easily accessible, but also protected from damage and the effects of the weather. This applies in particular to areas such as filling stations, underground garages or buildings that are not completely enclosed. Various protective measures are available here: Protective covers shield the fire extinguisher from the effects of the weather, while special cabinets or collision protection prevent mechanical damage.
Documentation of fire extinguisher installation
The documentation of fire extinguisher locations in the escape and rescue plan is mandatory. This also applies to other fire extinguishing equipment such as wall hydrants, which must be marked with the fire protection sign F002 “Extinguishing hose” in accordance with ASR A1.3.
Escape routes without safety lighting deserve special attention. Here, the fire safety signs must be made of photoluminescent materials so that they remain visible even in the event of a power failure or heavy smoke development.
