The regular inspection of fire alarm systems is important and crucial to ensure that they function properly in the event of a fire - and thus th

Inspection of fire alarm systems
The inspection of fire alarm systems (FAS) is divided into different areas and intervals. The responsibility for compliance with the various testing intervals according to DIN 14675 "Specifications for the installation and operation of fire alarm systems" and DIN VDE 0833 "Specifications for hazard alarm systems for fire, burglary and hold-up" lies with the building operator.
Quarterly inspection
An inspection of the fire alarm system in accordance with DIN 14675 and DIN VDE 0833 is required once every quarter. The following is checked as part of this:
- Soiling and damage to components (e.g. fire detectors).
- Structural changes
- Changes to the surrounding situation (e.g. due to conversion measures or changes in building use).
In addition, a visual inspection of fire alarm systems by an instructed person is mandatory every 3 months.

Annual test
The annual fire alarm system inspection in accordance with DIN 14675 by an expert includes, among other things, the inspection of:
- Components for contamination
- Components for damage
- Detectors and displays of the fire alarm system
- Alarm devices (sirens and flashing lights)
- Control of other fire protection equipment (extinguishing systems, hold-open systems, lifts)
- Power supply (incl. emergency power)
Good to know: For the fire alarm system test, the main detector is switched off so that no alarm is issued to the emergency services.

Recurring inspection
In addition, the recurring inspection by an external inspection expert is required at least every 3 years according to the TPrüfV (Technical Inspection Ordinance). If the required expert inspection of the fire alarm system has not been carried out, a fine (in accordance with the state building regulations) and the loss of insurance cover in the event of damage may be imposed.
Important: The results of all fire alarm system tests must be documented in an operating log. If this is not done, it is also an administrative offence.

Further inspection measures/duties
In addition to the above fire alarm system inspections, further measures are prescribed. These include replacing the battery emergency power supply at least every 4 years.
In addition, the fire detectors must be replaced every 5 to 8 years.
Further information on detector replacement according to DIN 14675 can be found here.
