Sliding fire protection gates

Effective protection for large wall openings!

2 September 2024 Fire Safety

Large wall openings are not uncommon in shopping centres, airports or industrial facilities. They enable flexible room designs and often serve logistical purposes.

But how can fire compartments be realised despite large wall openings? This is where sliding fire protection gates come into play.

What are sliding fire protection gates?

Sliding fire protection gates are special gates that have been developed to safely close large wall openings in the event of a fire. They close automatically and can hold back a fire for up to 120 minutes, depending on the fire resistance class. This effectively prevents the spread of fire and smoke, which creates valuable time for evacuation and firefighting.

Functionality in everyday life and in the event of fire

In daily operation, sliding fire protection gates can be opened either electrically or manually. An electromagnet holds the door in the open position.

In the event of a fire, the power supply to these electromagnets is interrupted. This can be done via the fire alarm system, stand-alone smoke detectors or a manual release button. As soon as the power supply is interrupted, the doors close immediately and automatically using closing weights.

Installation & areas of application for sliding fire protection gates

Sliding fire protection gates are installed in a variety of wall types such as masonry, concrete or drywall. Their versatility makes them ideal for a wide range of applications, including

  • Retail outlets
  • warehouses
  • underground car parks
  • industrial plants
  • airports

They are particularly essential in buildings with high pedestrian traffic and large areas to ensure safety in an emergency. Sliding fire protection gates are also available in the following fire resistance classes:

  • T30: fire-retardant
  • T60: highly fire-retardant
  • T90: fire-resistant
  • T120: highly fire-resistant

The choice of the right class depends on the specific requirements and legal specifications of the building in question.

Additional features for sliding fire protection gates

  • Wicket doors for escape and rescue routes
In areas that serve as escape and rescue routes, it is essential that the door is fitted with a wicket door. This allows people to leave the area quickly and safely without having to open the entire door.

  • Fire protection glazing
For better light transmission, the wicket door can be fitted with optional fire-resistant glazing. This not only contributes to safety, but also to convenience.

  • Material and design
Sliding fire protection gates are made of galvanised sheet steel as standard. However, options in stainless steel or painted in various RAL colours are also available for special requirements.

Maintenance is mandatory

A fire gate is only as good as its maintenance. It is therefore a legal requirement that these doors undergo a safety inspection and maintenance by an expert every 12 months.
