Smoke extraction in the stairwell is crucial to ensure a safe escape route in the event of a fire. Smoke extraction openings in the stairwell ensure that toxic fire smoke is extracted and the stairwell remains smoke-free.

Natural smoke extraction in the stairwell

Smoke extraction in the stairwell can be implemented via mechanical and natural smoke extraction openings. Natural smoke extraction uses the chimney effect, i.e. natural air currents and thermal buoyancy forces. Smoke extraction openings are installed in the stairwell in the form of skylights, skylight domes, arcade rooflights or windows on the outer wall. In the event of a fire, these openings are triggered either manually by a manual button or automatically by smoke detectors.

In addition to smoke extraction, a modern smoke extraction system in the stairwell with an electric drive enables regular air exchange, which prevents the formation of mold, for example.

Mechanical smoke extraction in the stairwell

Alternatively, mechanical smoke extraction in the stairwell is possible and often necessary if no openings to the outside can be installed. In the event of a fire, smoke and heat are extracted from the building via ventilation ducts using ventilation and fire gas fans. At the same time, air is exchanged via additional openings or supply air fans.

Regulations for stairwell smoke extraction

The exact regulations for smoke extraction in stairwells are set out in the state building regulations and vary from state to state. In general, internal stairwells must be equipped with a smoke extraction system, while specific building heights or numbers of storeys apply as a benchmark for external stairwells. For example, the smoke extraction system in the stairwell is generally required for buildings

  • 13 meters or more in height
  • from 5 storeys or
  • with internal stairwells (depending on the building regulations).

The installation and maintenance of a smoke extraction system in the stairwell is subject to various specifications in accordance with DIN, VDE and VdS.
