From manager to leader
In today's interview with Thorsten, branch manager at CWS Fire Safety in Koblenz, we talk about his most important experiences in building a strong team - and about the personal qualities required to become not just a manager, but a leader.
What is the difference between a manager and a leader? ‘Manager’ is often associated with a formal position focussing on processes, productivity and task execution. A leader, on the other hand, pursues a clear vision, motivates and inspires their team, promotes innovation and actively involves their employees in decision-making processes. Both roles are important, but true leadership arises where responsibility, vision and humanity come together.
Building a strong team
For Thorsten, his role as branch manager is not just about achieving key figures, but above all about supporting his team and achieving success together. The team meets every fortnight, bringing together both office and field staff. Current orders, processes and planned team events are discussed - such as the next event at the climbing park, which was suggested by the team itself.
Reflection and personal development

Regular self-reflection is a key success factor for Thorsten. ‘I often scrutinise myself to see if I can do something better,’ he explains. It's about continuously evaluating what went well and where improvements can be made. Thorsten has developed this mindset through coaching programmes, leadership seminars at CWS Fire Safety and reading motivational books: ‘The training courses have helped me to sharpen my mindset and take action,’ he says.
Responsibility and dealing with fears
When asked if he is never afraid of making the wrong decisions, Thorsten replies: "I'm not afraid. I used to run into burning houses in the volunteer fire brigade. It's more about what could happen in the worst-case scenario and whether I can live with it." He then adds humorously: "I'm only a little scared at great heights. In the climbing park, I prefer to stay on the ground.".
The importance of communication and trust
Thorsten attaches great importance to communication and trust within his team. ‘We are a colourful bunch, everyone is different,’ says Thorsten. He has learned that employees have unique strengths and that it is crucial to recognise and promote these strengths. ‘It's not always possible to please everyone, but I try,’ he says. However, the most important thing for him is the trust of his team - and never letting that trust down. ‘I grow with my responsibility,’ he says, ‘and everyone who takes on this responsibility will grow with it - not just in their job, but in their entire life.’
Tips for prospective managers
Thorsten has clear recommendations for future managers: ‘Be courageous when making decisions and take responsibility.’ It is also important to reflect regularly: ‘If you scrutinise yourself, you can constantly improve.’ Good communication and building trust are also essential for him. "As a manager, you have to be clear and transparent, especially in difficult times. And never forget: you are not alone. Success is a team effort."
