What is active and passive fire protection?

We show the differences between active and passive fire protection and how both systems work together optimally.

17 January 2025 Fire Safety

Effective fire protection is essential for the safety of buildings and their occupants. A distinction is made between two approaches: Active and passive fire protection. Both approaches complement each other perfectly and together ensure greater safety and less damage in the event of a fire.

Definition: Active and passive fire protection

Active fire protection includes all measures and systems that actively intervene in the event of a fire in order to fight or contain the fire. These systems require either automatic activation or human intervention.

Passive fire protection, on the other hand, refers to structural and design measures that are already taken into account during building planning. These systems function without external intervention and are designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke.

Active fire protection comprises various complementary systems. At the centre are modern fire alarm systems, which make an important contribution to safety by detecting smoke or fire at an early stage. They work hand in hand with automatic extinguishing systems, which start fighting the fire immediately in the event of a fire and can thus effectively contain the spread of the fire.

Another important component is smoke and heat extraction systems, which ensure the targeted removal of smoke and heat in the event of an emergency. This is particularly important as smoke gases often pose a greater danger than the fire itself.

Strategically placed fire extinguishers and wall hydrants are also essential for rapid manual firefighting. These enable trained personnel and the fire brigade to take targeted and effective action against incipient fires.

Passive fire protection in detail

Passive fire protection is based on preventive measures that are firmly integrated into the building structure. A central element is the sophisticated subdivision of the building into fire compartments. This structural segmentation prevents the rapid spread of fire and smoke in the event of an emergency, saving valuable time for evacuation and firefighting.

Smoke and fire doors play an important role here, reliably separating these fire compartments from one another. They are equipped with special seals and offer a precisely defined fire resistance period.

Special attention is also paid to fire protection compartmentalisation. All breakthroughs and openings in walls and ceilings are carefully sealed to effectively separate the fire compartments. The basis for all these measures is the use of fire-resistant building materials, which are already taken into account during the building planning stage. Architects, engineers and structural engineers work closely together to develop a coherent fire protection concept.
