Hold-open device for fire doors - advice, installation & maintenance
The hold-open device is a system for keeping fire doors open. This means that a hold-open device (also known as a hold-open system, or FSA for short) keeps the fire door open and closes it automatically in the event of a fire. In this way, fire doors remain open during everyday operation, while they are automatically closed in the event of a fire to prevent the rapid spread of smoke and fire. This guarantees a reliable closure. It should be noted that only hold-open devices approved by the DIBt (Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik) may be used for fire doors.
The hold-open device for fire doors is available in different versions:
- Magnetic holding device: In the event of smoke detection, the circuit of the magnet is interrupted and the fire door closes automatically. Frequently used e.g. in schools, workshops or production areas.
- Integrated door closer: The hold-open device is built into a sliding rail and has a visually appealing appearance. The door closes automatically when smoke is detected.
- Overhead door closer: The hold-open device is installed on a 1-leaf or 2-leaf fire door with an integrated smoke switch. The door can be opened with little effort. As an alternative to the hold-open device, a freewheeling mechanism can be installed to ensure that the fire door moves easily, as with a room door. This is often used in retirement homes, hospitals or schools.
A hold-open device consists of various components. It can be purchased with 1 leaf or 2 leaves (with closing sequence control for 2-leaf doors) and optionally with linkage, slide rail or holding magnet. Closing speed, opening damping, closing force and hold-open angle can be individually adjusted.
Hold-open devices are approved by the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt). Acceptance is carried out by a CWS expert certified by the manufacturer. We will be happy to advise you on all topics such as fire doors and hold-open devices.
Maintenance of hold-open devices: According to DIN 14677, a safety inspection and maintenance of a hold-open device must be carried out by an expert every 12 months.
