Fire department route maps are a key element of every fire alarm system (FAS) and serve as an important orientation aid for the fire department in an emergency. They show exactly where a fire has been detected and which route is the fastest to the triggered alarm from an operational perspective. This enables rapid intervention and significantly reduces the time required for time-consuming reconnaissance. Fire brigade route maps are not a substitute for the fire brigade plan – rather, they are an independent, supplementary source of information.

When are fire brigade route maps required?

Fire brigade route maps are always required when a fire alarm system (FAS) is installed and connected to the local fire department. This requirement is an integral part of building regulations and must not be neglected.

Even though it is not a mandatory requirement, many operators voluntarily decide to integrate fire brigade route maps into fire alarm systems. These are often used in kindergartens, care facilities, or smaller businesses and are used exclusively for internal alarms. In such cases, route maps also contribute to quick orientation and greater safety in the event of a fire.

Legal basis for fire escape plans in detail

The legal basis for fire escape plans is DIN 14675, which regulates the planning, installation, operation, and maintenance of fire alarm systems. This standard stipulates that at least one fire escape plan must be available for each detector group of a fire alarm system. Fire escape plans according to DIN 14675 must:

  • be easy to read, clear, and up to date,
  • indicate the exact location of the triggered detector,
  • and show the optimal route from the fire department control panel (FBF) or the initial information point to the detector.

The fire brigade route map always consists of two pages: the front page shows either the overview plan of the entire property or the relevant floor plan, while the back page shows the specific monitoring area with detector positions and routes. Even for systems with digital printing of route maps, a complete, physical set of maps remains mandatory – this must be available separately at all times.

What must be taken into account when creating fire brigade route maps in accordance with DIN?

The maps are created on the basis of DIN 14675 and the specifications of the local fire department. The responsible fire departments often provide supplementary information sheets that must be taken into account during the preparation process. Our CAD experts provide you with comprehensive support – from analysis to coordination with the authorities.
