Fire department plans in accordance with DIN 14095 are indispensable documents for fire department operations. They help to quickly assess the situation in a building or on a site and initiate targeted measures. They contain all relevant information about the property in a structured form – from the building structure and escape and rescue routes to fire extinguishing systems and special risks. Fire department plans enable targeted planning of operations and save crucial seconds in an emergency.

When is a fire department plan necessary?

In many cases, a fire department plan is not only recommended but mandatory. The plan is particularly mandatory for buildings with a fire alarm system that includes automatic alarm forwarding to the fire department. Requirements from the fire protection concept, requirements from the building permit authority, or requirements from the local fire department may also make it necessary to create a fire department plan. As a rule, the necessity of a fire department plan can be derived from the building permit documents.

Legal requirements according to DIN 14095

The creation and maintenance of fire department plans are clearly regulated in DIN 14095. According to this standard, the plans must always correspond to the current structural condition. A competent person is obliged to review the fire department plan at least every two years and update it if necessary. In addition, coordination with the responsible fire protection authority is mandatory. This is the only way to ensure that the fire department plan can be fully effective in an emergency.

Components of a fire department plan

A complete fire department plan consists of several elements that together provide a comprehensive picture of the situation. These include:

  • general property information,
  • an overview plan,
  • floor plans with detailed information,
  • additional explanations and, if necessary, special plans.

All information must correspond exactly to the actual condition of the building or site. Before creating the plan, it is always necessary to check whether the responsible fire protection authority has provided additional requirements or information sheets.
