In foundries, the risk from hot materials is particularly high and the requirements for adequate protective clothing are high. Thermal hazards arise not only from possible contact with molten metals, slags, and other burning or hot working materials, but also from thermal radiation.
Employees can be burned by molten metal, slag and solidified but still hot castings. Melt can spill over and splash during tapping of melting furnaces, interception and transfer into ladles, transport, and casting, or flow out of parting lines when molds "go through" during pouring. Clothing made of flame-retardant material must be worn in smelters and foundries to protect against burn injuries. In particular, the body, arms and hands must be protected.
