What needs to be considered for workwear in the construction industry?

The number of workplace accidents in the construction industry is more than twice that of the commercial sector as a whole.

To prevent accidents at work, workwear for the construction and civil engineering sectors must be:

  • be durable (e.g. with reinforcements, knee pads) and provide a high level of occupational safety
  • be dirt/water repellent and protect against all weather conditions
  • be comfortable: neither too loose, too baggy nor too tight
  • be correctly sized to avoid areas of the garment where you can be caught or pulled in.

In civil engineering, high-visibility clothing must be worn when:

  • people are at risk from road/rail vehicle traffic
  • the visibility of a person is to be increased; this applies to all work situations where there is a risk of being "overlooked", both during the day
  • and at dusk and in the dark.

What needs to be considered when wearing work clothing for demolition work?

Demolition and dismantling is one of the riskiest activities in the construction industry due to the use of construction machinery and heavy equipment. The risk of a fatal workplace accident in demolition is about 15 times higher than in the rest of the construction industry.

Demolition clothing must

  • Durable and stain resistant
  • be weatherproof, i.e. protect against extreme temperatures, soaking and strong solar UV radiation, or provide protection from the elements (rain, cold).

Additional UV protection is recommended from April to September.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required:

  • for handling biological agents such as mould (e.g. protective suits, face, eye and respiratory protection)
electrical hazards, such as electric arcs
  • Fire and/or explosion hazards, e.g. due to flames, welding or soldering, or working with cutting equipment.

CWS Service ensures that protective clothing always complies with all EU-wide regulations. Our CWS experts are familiar with the specific requirements of personal protective equipment, the relevant standards and professional reprocessing.

What needs to be considered for work clothing in road construction?

Wearing high-visibility clothing is essential when working in road construction.

Based on a risk assessment for each workplace, high-visibility clothing for road construction may need to provide additional protection. This may include protection against

  • Exposure to moisture, wind, cold, UV radiation
  • Mechanical effects
  • Chemical effects
  • Flammable substances, flames and flying sparks
  • Thermal effects from an arc fault
  • Exposure to biological agents

CWS high visibility and weather protective clothing transports body fluids to the outside. This means that the natural temperature regulation processes of the human body are not significantly affected during physical work. The lightweight materials are also comfortable to wear.

What are the protection levels of high-visibility clothing?

High-visibility clothing is a must when working in hazardous environments. Fluorescent background material ensures maximum visibility during the day, while retro-reflective material increases visibility at dusk and in the dark. The high-visibility class is determined by the minimum area of the background and reflective material.

How do I care for and wash my construction workwear?

Take it off and wash it? For some workwear, this is not necessarily recommended. Improper care of workwear and PPE can lead to a loss of protection. Also, a clean appearance does not always mean that your workwear is hygienically clean. Some hygiene requirements cannot be met by standard household washing machines. Substances such as oil and grease can also end up in the waste water, which is always filtered out in CWS Workwear's professional laundries.

For those who want to benefit from a professional and worry-free laundry service, there is the CWS FLEX service. In our own high-tech laundries, we ensure that your workwear is cleaned and maintained to a high standard. Certified RABC hygiene management according to DIN 1406 and quality management according to DIN EN ISO 9001 ensure a clean appearance.

Can I customise my workwear for the construction industry?

Of course you can! Our logo and emblem service can help you achieve a distinctive and professional look. We offer your company a range of options for placing company logos and name badges on workwear. Not only does this ensure a high level of recognition, but it also promotes a sense of togetherness within the team.
