Washing your hands with soap made with upcycled orange peel extracts? Yes, it's possible, and Unwaste is making it happen together with CWS Hygiene. After all, what else can you do with the 250 million kilograms of orange peels that are left over every year after squeezing fresh juice?
For most companies, these peels are waste, but for us, they are a valuable raw material. We give these peels a second life as a part of refreshing, circular hand soap for our soap dispensers.
Circular collaboration
Nature knows no waste. With this in mind, Unwaste developed a circular production process in which post-consumer orange peel extracts are upcycled into an ingredient for a hand soap with a natural origin content of 89%. CWS Hygiene saw this as an opportunity to make sanitary facilities even more sustainable.
"Nature knows no waste"
Bart Aupers, Co-Founder of Unwaste:
“Nature knows no waste. Unwaste gives organic waste streams a new function in personal care. Orange peels, for example, are the refreshing and nourishing ingredients in the soap used in CWS dispensers. Pure, and without waste.”
From waste to valuable raw material
Orange peel oil usually comes from oranges used in juice factories or other food industries. This is what makes Unwaste's process so unique, because it uses orange peels after post-consumer consumption: the residual material from juice production that would normally be discarded. Where a lot of orange juice is squeezed, think for example (juice) bars at stations or airports, there are also a lot of peels. These are collected. The oil is extracted from the orange peels and then used as an ingredient in the production of hand soap. The soap is delivered to you on a regular basis by CWS Hygiene. In this way, we not only create a pleasant hand washing experience, but also innovation and sustainability in your sanitary facilities.
Each liter of soap contains upcycled ingredients made from approximately 520 grams of post-consumer orange peel residues that would otherwise be discarded. By giving organic waste from end consumers a second life, Unwaste reduces the need for virgin raw materials and helps cut avoidable waste in production.
The orange oil from the peels gives the soap its natural scent and color. What was once waste is now a nourishing and renewable ingredient.
The journey from peel to soap
Natural, locally and fairly produced
Small choice, big difference
Washing your hands may seem like a small moment, but in large buildings or organizations, hands are washed thousands of times a day. By replacing your standard soap with Unwaste soap, you can structurally help reduce waste. The Unwaste soap fits in the CWS ParadiseLine dispensers and CWS PureLine EcoBlack dispensers.
For companies, this is a visible and tangible way to support sustainability goals, from ESG reporting to daily practice.
Throw it away? We turn it into soap.
That’s what we mean by clean with a purpose: rethinking hygiene through reuse and upcycling.
Healthy hands, healthy planet
With Unwaste soap, we prove that you don't have to choose between sustainability and hygiene, but that they can go together perfectly. The formula has a Natural Origin Index of 89%, and has a subtle orange scent. Ideal for use in offices, schools, or the hospitality industry. Good hand hygiene meets a cleaner planet!
CWS Hygiene and Unwaste share the same conviction: a world where waste is seen as a resource, not as something to throw away. By cleverly reusing waste streams, we create products that add value instead of waste.
The introduction of Unwaste soap is a step towards a circular future, in which hygiene, sustainability, and innovation go hand in hand.
