Bacteria are organisms that are only a thousandth of a millimetre in size and consist of one cell. Bacteria are everywhere and in most cases are something we need and benefit from, i.e. the good bacteria. But there are also bacteria that can make us sick. If these bad bacteria get past the body's various defences, they can grow and multiply, eventually making us ill, and an infection has occurred. Usually the body can fight an infection on its own and without help, but sometimes it may need bacteria-killing drugs, like antibiotics.  

By washing and disinfecting your hands thoroughly, you greatly reduce the risk of catching the bad bacteria. 

Yes. Infection occurs when an infectious agent attacks your body. There are several different types of infections, the most common being colds and flu, but also strep throat comes from a bacterium.  

Infection and inflammation are not the same thing. Inflammation is the body's way of reacting to an injury or attack. An infection almost always leads to inflammation.  

Good hand hygiene is the most important way to avoid infection, and at times of the year when many infections spread, it is especially important.
