Fire Extinguishers – Compulsory or not?
Fire extinguishers are an effective means of initially fighting incipient fires. They’re quickly ready for use and easy to handle, making them the ideal aid for company employees in case of fire.
Unlike private households, in Germany it’s only workplaces that have to be equipped with fire extinguishers as is stipulated in the ASR A2.2 regulation. The responsibility for this lies with the employer. Nevertheless, it is recommended that fire extinguishers are also available at centrally accessible points in residential buildings.

Amount and types of fire extinguishers
The basic equipment of fire extinguishers is obligatory for commercial enterprises, so their number is also determined. The number of fire extinguishers is determined by the number of extinguishing units (LE) - an auxiliary quantity that makes it possible to compare different fire extinguishers with each other in order to calculate the extinguishing capacity and the need for equipment.
Fire hazard, fire load and floor space all play a role. In addition, for example, the barrel length, fire class and damage prevention of extinguishing agents also determine the choice of fire extinguisher. CWS offers a wide variety of fire extinguishers, so you can be sure that we will find the right product for you.
Fire extinguisher assembly
Our CWS Fire Safety technician will assemble the fire extinguishing equipment with the appropriate installation material and also affixes the fire protection signs at the equipment locations. Fire protection solutions from CWS
Properly maintain fire extinguishers
Fire extinguisher maintenance in the commercial sector is specified in the regulation ASR A2.2, "Measures against fires" and requires fire extinguishers to be tested at least every two years by an expert.
Our technicians, trained in accordance with DIN 14406-4, carry out the maintenance directly in your company. In the process, the fire extinguishers are professionally maintained, wear parts are replaced and their functionality is tested. A new maintenance certificate on the fire extinguishers proves the maintenance and provides information about when what has been tested by whom and when the next test is due. With a maintenance contract with CWS Fire Safety, we take care of everything and automatically send you the new maintenance date. We will also be happy to provide you with the necessary documentation in accordance with ASR A2.2 and BetrSichV.
Additional visual inspection
In addition to the two-year cycle, fire extinguishers should be regularly inspected visually. If parts such as hoses are damaged, you should inform us immediately. The same applies to missing locking pins and damaged seals, as they indicate that the fire extinguisher has been used and hung up again empty. Our fire protection technicians make the extinguishing device functional again.
Fire extinguishers all brands
In addition to its own fire extinguishers, CWS also offers maintenance and servicing of all common manufacturer brands, such as
What fire extinguishers exist?
We distinguish between powder extinguishers, foam extinguishers, water extinguishers, carbon dioxide extinguishers and grease fire extinguishers.
Which fire extinguisher is used for which room?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this as use depends on the fire class of the fire extinguisher and on the objects in the room. However, we can give a rough estimate on this:
- A foam extinguisher is more suitable for indoor use.
- A grease fire extinguisher is also useful for kitchens.
- For IT server rooms, carbon dioxide extinguishers are usually used.
We’d be happy to provide you with specific recommendations when we know your building.
What do the large letters such as A, B, or C on a fire extinguisher mean?
The letter shows the fire class for which the fire extinguisher is intended. If several letters are shown, the device is approved for several fire classes.
- A = Solid, non-melting materials such as wood, textiles, paper and coal
- B = Liquid, melting solid substances such as gasoline, oils and waxes
- C = Gaseous substances, including those under pressure, such as propane, butane, acetylene, natural gas and methane
- D = Combustible metals such as aluminium, magnesium and sodium
- F = Edible oils as well as vegetable or animal fats
When do fire extinguishers have to be replaced?
The service life of a fire extinguisher without constant pressure, i.e. a rechargeable fire extinguisher, is around 20 to 25 years, depending on the manufacturer of the device.
Can I also use a fire extinguisher from a hardware store or discount shop?
Caution! There are several criteria that should be considered when making a purchase.
- In the commercial sector, all fire extinguishers require proof of maintenance by a competent person, which is not the case with a fire extinguisher purchased from a hardware store.
- Usually, these are powder extinguishers. They usually cause a great deal of damage when used, as the powder settles in all the small cracks, whether they be in floors, cupboards or electrical appliances.
- Fire extinguishers often also have a low extinguishing unit and do not provide the prescribed extinguishing capacity.
- The devices are usually permanent pressure extinguishers and must be inspected by an expert every 10 years according to § 32 of the Druckbehälterverordnung (Pressure Vessel Regulation), e.g. by TÜV). Expertise is required here.
