Fire extinguishers are an indispensable part of fire protection measures in every building, whether in offices, industry or public facilities. There is a choice between two variants, which differ primarily in their technical design. We show you the differences between permanent pressure extinguishers and rechargeable extinguishers so that you can make the right choice for your needs.

Permanent pressure extinguisher

The permanent pressure extinguisher consists of a container and is constantly pressurized. This means that it can always be used directly, i.e. additional activation of the extinguisher is not necessary. However, the pressure can escape over time. It is therefore important to check the pressure of the permanent pressure extinguisher regularly using the attached pressure gauge.

Permanent pressure fire extinguishers are available in foam, powder, water and CO2 versions. They are generally cheaper to purchase than rechargeable extinguishers. However, the maintenance costs are usually higher.

Charging extinguisher

The rechargeable extinguisher consists of an extinguishing agent container and an integrated propellant bottle. The propellant (gas) is only released when activated by means of a lever fitting or firing head. Pressure loss is not possible. However, the rechargeable fire extinguisher must first be activated in the event of a fire so that the gas and extinguishing agent mix and the extinguisher is ready for use.

Charging fire extinguishers are available in foam, powder and water versions. They are often more expensive to purchase, but have lower maintenance costs.

Our recommendation

In principle, permanent pressure fire extinguishers and rechargeable fire extinguishers fulfill the same purpose. They are there to fight incipient fires quickly and reliably. They do not differ in their extinguishing performance, but in the price for purchase and maintenance and the way they work.

Important: Both variants are subject to a two-year maintenance obligation in companies and the same requirements for extinguishing agent replacement (generally every 6-8 years).
