In an emergency, every second counts. An escape plan provides quick orientation in buildings by showing escape routes, fire protection facilities and first aid facilities. In this way, escape route plans make a decisive contribution to the protection of people and property.

What is an escape plan?

An escape plan is a simplified building sketch of public and commercial buildings that shows the quickest way out and to the assembly point. The technically correct term is "escape and rescue plan".

When is an escape plan required?

An escape plan is required for almost all commercial and public buildings. It is also part of the fire protection concept. In addition, an escape plan is required by law according to § 4 of the Workplace Ordinance as well as ASR A1.3 and A2.3 (Technical Rules for Workplaces). Consequently, the employer must ensure that escape route plans are available in sufficient numbers at suitable locations if the location, extent and type of use of the workplace require this.

What must an escape route plan contain?

Was muss ein Fluchtwegeplan enthalten-CWS Fire Safety

An escape route plan must be clear and uniformly designed. Consequently, contents, colours, safety signs, scale and font sizes are defined in DIN ISO 23601 and DIN EN ISO 7010. In addition, an escape plan must contain the following information:

  • Floor plan of the building or part of the building
  • Location of the viewer
  • Course of escape routes and emergency exits
  • Fire protection equipment (e.g. fire extinguishers or wall hydrants)
  • First aid facilities
  • Assembly points

At the same time, the escape route plan usually provides information on the correct behaviour in case of fire and accidents. Furthermore, an escape plan must be clearly visible, legible, in the correct position and permanently mounted. If the colour or the floor plan fades or if the signage is replaced, the escape plans must be updated and renewed.

Who draws up an escape plan?

In principle, an expert should draw up an escape route plan. This expert is familiar with the regulations and can therefore create legally compliant escape route plans.

Our regional experts are at your service throughout Germany. Find out more about how we can create legally compliant escape route plans for you.

How often do escape plans need to be updated?

Escape plans should be checked at regular intervals and updated if necessary. The intervals are to be determined individually. In the event of adaptations in the building or fire protection measures being taken, a direct update is required. In general, it is recommended to have escape plans checked by a competent person every 2 years.

How is an escape plan created at CWS?

Fluchtplan Erstellung und Aktualisierung durch CWS

In the first step, the regional CWS experts inspect the local conditions. Our experts record the existing escape and rescue routes, emergency exits, assembly points, first aid facilities and fire protection equipment. If necessary, an additional exchange takes place with building planners and other authorities (e.g. the fire brigade).

Subsequently, our in-house CAD draughtsmen draw up the escape plans for your building on the basis of the legal and regional requirements. Professional software and a four-eye principle are used for this. In addition to the subsequent assembly of the escape plans, we also provide you with high-quality frames (e.g. made of acrylic, PVC or metal) as well as safety lighting and signs. Subsequent updating of an escape plan is possible at any time.

CWS also creates and updates fire escape plans, fire brigade run maps or seating plans. Click here for more info on fire protection plans from CWS.
