25 March 2024 Fire Safety

In recent years, the issue of PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated chemicals) has become increasingly important. The potentially harmful effects on the environment and human health are becoming ever clearer. As a result, various PFAS bans are gradually coming into force in the EU - and therefore also in Germany. These include the ban on PFAS in fire extinguishers.

PFAS and fire extinguishers: the connection

PFAS are a group of chemicals that have been used in various industrial applications, including fire extinguishers. They are characterised by their water and grease repellent properties. For example, they have been used in foam fire extinguishers to ensure effective firefighting.

PFAS ban: Fire extinguishers

The decision to ban the use of PFAS in fire extinguishers, among other things, is based on growing knowledge about the environmental and health risks of these chemicals. Germany and the EU have recognised that a ban is necessary in order to reduce the contamination of soil, water and ultimately humans with PFAS.

  • From April 10, 2026, the use of PFAS-containing fire extinguishers for training purposes and by public fire departments will no longer be permitted.

  • From October 10, 2026, fire extinguishers containing PFAS may no longer be placed on the market.

  • PFAS fire extinguishers manufactured before the deadline may be used until 2030 under a transitional arrangement.

Early change makes sense

There is a transition period for PFAS fire extinguishers. Nevertheless, an early switch to PFAS-free fire extinguishers makes sense for an economical transition.

In this way, the costs can be spread over several years in the ongoing maintenance cycle. As a full-service provider, we naturally have PFAS-free fire extinguishers in our portfolio and are happy to support companies in making an economical transition.

FAQ

on the PFAS ban

What is PFAS?

PFAS are perfluorinated and polyfluorinated chemicals that have been used in various industrial applications due to their water and grease repellent properties.

Why is PFAS so dangerous?

Per- and polyfluorinated chemicals can accumulate in the environment and in the human body and have potentially harmful effects on health. They have been linked to various health problems, including cancer, liver disease and hormonal disorders.

When does the PFAS ban apply in Germany?

From October 10, 2026, no foam extinguishers containing PFAS may be placed on the market. Due to the EU ban on fluorinated fire extinguishing agents, the extinguishing agent is no longer available for existing foam extinguishers because production has been discontinued. A complete replacement with fluorine-free fire extinguishers is therefore unavoidable. Retrofitting can be examined, but requires an assessment of feasibility and cost-effectiveness. During the transition period, the use of fluorine-containing fire extinguishers is only permitted for fire class B, not for fire class A.

What does the PFAS ban mean for my fire extinguishers?

The ban means that fire extinguishers containing PFAS may no longer be used. Companies must switch to fluorine-free alternatives.

What are the real benefits of the PFAS ban on fire extinguishers?

The ban helps to protect the environment and human health by restricting the use of a potentially hazardous chemical and encouraging the use of safer alternatives.
